This photo from 2007, shows a defiant fifteen-year old foot soldier of Fatah’s militia in the volatile Palestinian camp Ain al-Hilweh in Lebanon. On the walls around him pockmarked holes from recent firefights on the streets between rival factions. Sectarian violence in this Kafkaesque and perilous environment still erupts without notice. Because Lebanese Armed Forces are not allowed to enter the camp Ain al-Hilweh has been called a "zone of unlaw" by Lebanese media
Many boys and young men here get caught up in the vortex of violence and religious extremism peddled by messianic demagogues. Turf wars continue in this camp with the dominant Fatah clashing with Islamist groups such as Jund al-Sham all employing language steeped in medieval fanaticism.
